Building Community Through the Bishop Lions Club

Service clubs like the Bishop Lions Club don't get a lot of attention, but they quietly hold a lot of small towns together. That's why I joined, and that's why I stay.
The Lions Club is where the unglamorous community work happens — fundraisers for kids' glasses, community events, the small projects that don't make the news but make the town better. It's not glamorous, and nobody's in it for the credit.
What I've learned is that community isn't something you have; it's something you build, one small act at a time. You show up. You stack chairs. You flip burgers. You write the check when you can. And over years, the town gets a little stronger because a bunch of people kept showing up.
If you've been looking for a way to plug in, find your local Lions Club, Elks Lodge, or volunteer group. They're not looking for experts. They're looking for people willing to show up. That's most of it.
